Litter-less lunch challenge 2015-2016
Welcome to our Eco-Challenge page.
************Parents of 5G 2017-2018******************
Last year, we had a great liter-less class. We challenged each other to be as eco friendly as possible. We recycle all we can and re-use re-use re-use.
How can you, as parents, help us in our challenge?
1. Buy snack foods in bulk and pack them in your child's lunches in re-usable containers. This saves on liter and it also saves you money. This can also be used with dips, such as hummus, salsa and salad dressings. Cheeses and yogurts can also be bought in bulk and packed in re-usable containers which saves you money and saves plastic from going in the waste.
2. Pack homemade snacks and meals for your children. Home baked goods are tastier and healthier and can be made easily. Be on the lookout for some tasty recipes you can try! Leftovers are always welcome in class and there are several micro-waves available for re-heating. Fruits and veggies are always great choices.
3. Pack re-usable utensils. Not only will this save on plastic in the trash, it will save you money! I also have utensils in the class that are washable and if kids forget one from home, I have some on hand!
4. Encourage your child to drink water or milk instead of juice boxes. While the boxes are recyclable, the straws and the plastic sleeve which house the straws are not. Juice is also very high in sugar.
Please feel free to e-mail me your suggestions and recipes and I will post them!
Part 2 of our class challenge is to reduce the amount of compost - in other words food waste - we produce each day. Food waste is a growing problem across the globe all the while millions of children every year die of lack of food. Here is a great article by leading environmental scientist David Suzuki on why food waste matters.
